History of Golf in Piešťany – from 1914 to the Present Day
Piešťany is world-famous as a spa town, but few people know that it is home to one of the historically most significant golf courses on the European continent. The story of Piešťany golf began over a century ago and is inextricably linked with the flourishing of spa life, aristocratic culture and names that left their mark on the history of Slovakia and Europe.
1914: The Birth of Europe's Finest Course
On 26 July 1914 – just days before the outbreak of the First World War – the ceremonial opening of the golf course took place on the Spa Island in Piešťany. The initiators and founders were brothers Ľudovít and Imrich Winter, who owned the Piešťany baths and had a vision of turning Piešťany into a world centre of healing and social life.
The opening was accompanied by an airshow – a demonstration of the era's technological progress. The British magazine Golf Illustrated wrote without hesitation about the new course: "The finest golf course on the continent has now been opened at the Piešťany baths." The finest course on the continent – that is how the international professional world welcomed it.
The Interwar Period: The Golden Age of Piešťany Golf
The 1920s and 1930s represent the golden era of Piešťany golf. On the nine-hole course measuring 2,652 metres with a par of 37, the European elite gathered regularly. Piešťany hosted several prestigious tournaments:
- Spring Cup – spring tournament (end of May)
- International Summer Cup for the New York Herald Trophy – international summer tournament (mid-July)
- Vilém Erdödy Cup – tournament named after the count and honorary president of the club
- Jan Masaryk Cup – in honour of the diplomat and honorary club member
- Czechoslovak Championships
Politicians, artists and aristocrats from across Europe gathered on the fairways. Count Paul Pálfi, Baron Franz Ringhoffer (captain of the Prague Golf Club), diplomat Jan Masaryk, and the famous Czech painter Alfons Mucha – these are just some of the names that left their mark on the history of Piešťany golf.
Interruption and Return
The Second World War and subsequent political changes severely disrupted golf life in Piešťany. Golf, considered a "bourgeois sport", was sidelined for decades. Yet the memory of the golden era never entirely faded.
After 1989, golf slowly returned. In 1992, Piešťany Golf Club was re-established and interest in the sport grew. The decisive turning point was 21 July 2004, when a new nine-hole course was opened on the northern part of the Spa Island. Piešťany thus regained a worthy course befitting its history.
Golf Piešťany Today
Today Golf Piešťany continues the tradition that the Winter brothers began over a century ago. The course, with parameters of par 68 and a length of 4,326 metres (when two nines are played), is open to members and the public. The club organises annual tournaments, youth training camps and beginners' courses – including the popular Green Card and Introduction to Golf courses.
Whether you are an experienced player or just thinking about golf – the Spa Island in Piešťany is a place where history meets the present. A place where kings, artists and diplomats once played golf. And a place where you can begin your own golf story.
